CBTp Trainings
What is CBT for psychosis?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp) is a type of talk therapy that helps people who experience symptoms like hearing voices, feeling paranoid, or having unusual beliefs that others may not share.
CBTp doesn’t tell people what’s “real” or not. Instead, it helps them:
- Understand what they’re experiencing.
- Manage stress and strong emotions.
- Find new ways to cope with thoughts or voices that are upsetting or hard to ignore.
- Build confidence and reconnect with school, work, or relationships.
It’s based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected—and that small changes in one area can lead to big improvements in others.
Unfortunately, CBTp is extremely difficult to access in the U.S. A study conducted by UW SPIRIT Center co-director Dr. Sarah Kopelovich suggests that fewer than 1% of behavioral health practitioners across the US and Canada are trained in the intervention. The UW SPIRIT Center is determined to change that dismal statistic, not only by implementing CBTp into more clinics, ACT teams, and inpatient settings each year, but by bringing training directly to community members and practitioners through both traditional distance learning and innovative AI-enhanced training.

Individual Looking for CBTp Training
The CBTp Training Academy in the SPIRIT Center offers virtual and in-person workshops in CBTp and CBTp-informed care to mental health professionals and loved ones who support individuals experiencing psychosis. These trainings do not require that the clinical setting is participating in a formal implementation of CBTp. Rather, these trainings are designed to allow individual practitioners and family members to learn more about how CBTp can enhance care and outcomes for individuals with psychosis. Currently, we offer open-enrollment trainings oriented toward psychiatric care providers as well as introductory and advanced workshops for a broader range of mental health providers. In addition to live workshop trainings, we offer a range of asynchronous distance learning opportunities, so practitioners can learn at their own pace at times that are convenient for them.

Mental Health Agency or Hospital Looking for CBTp Training
The SPIRIT Center CBTp implementation team partners with state and agency administrators to engage in systematic implementation of CBTp within and across healthcare settings. We offer a range of options that can be customized to your needs, constraints, and objectives. If you are interested in adding CBT for psychosis to the menu of treatment options for your clients with psychotic disorders, we encourage you to view our foundational and intensive training offerings and complete our CBTp Intake Form. The intake form helps us get a snapshot of the characteristics of your setting. Based on research establishing important considerations for organizational readiness to adopt a new evidence-based treatment (EBT), this intake process helps us ensure that your setting is set up for success in making and sustaining CBTp.
